CrossBows.

CrossbowIf you are watching American movies in which the settings are from the medieval times and that there is warfare between two tribes, having the swords and armor, and bows and arrows as their primary weapons, then you must imagine how a crossbow looks like.

From the word itself, a crossbow, is in a shape of a cross, wherein a short bow is attached and is mounted crosswise near the end of a stick, most commonly called as a tiller or stock. It has a lever connected to its stock, in which its purpose is to aid in loading the crossbow.

The arrow that is fired with the use of a crossbow is called a bolt. These projectiles are much shorter compared to other types of arrows used for different kinds of bows. These bolts are also much heavier compared to others. The sizes of these bolts are approximately 16-20 inches long, and instead of having a nock, what it has is a flat rear insert.

In order to achieve much energy, there is an optimum weight requirement for a bolt. In fact, bolts nowadays are commonly stamped with markings to show that they are of consistent weight.

There are different variants of crossbow available in the market; although it has two main divisions, namely the production and the freestyle crossbows. The first one is the most common type, which is made available in every archery shops; while freestyle are the customized types of crossbows.

Each crossbow differs from its size, the energy it can produced, its acceleration system, and its projectiles. There are also crossbow variants that contain the characteristics of a crossbow and other types of bows. One example is a recurve crossbow, a crossbow having recurve limbs (recurves are separately discussed under the Recurve Bows). The other type is a compound crossbow, which has the characteristics of both a crossbow and a compound bow (Compound Bow is discussed in a separate page). Other variants of a crossbow are the pistol grip crossbows (which are known as the smallest kind of crossbow), the repeating crossbow, and the bullet crossbow.

Crossbows are known to be more accurate compared to traditional longbows. It is also a perfect weapon for hunting and other target practice and activities, since crossbows are easy to operate and thus makes it much better for you to focus to a target, compare to other bows. Although, its only disadvantage is that it takes more time to load the bolts in a crossbow, rather that setting the arrows in other classic bows.

Recurve Bows.

Recurve BowWhat makes a recurve bow different from other type of bows is that the recurve's tips are curved away from the archer, while the bow is unstrung. Also, unlike the other bows, the string of a recurve bow touches some parts of its limbs, whenthe bow is strung. With its construct, a recurve bow stores more energy, compared to straight-limbed bows, therefore, it also gives much force on the arrow once it is released.

During the recurve bow's humble beginnings, it was traced to primarily spread in Egypt, Asia, and the Middle East, as early as the second millennium BC. Recurve bows are also found out to be used as weapons by the Roman Imperial archers, as well as in the British Isles. It was also spread in selected parts of Europe and the North America, primarily used as their firearms.

Nowadays, a typical modern recurve bow is the one that is used by the modern archers in the Olympics, and other competitive affairs. Much advancement had been introduced and utilized with the modern recurve bows that are available today, in order to give the customer the best performance with these top of line kinds of recurve bows.

There are different types of recurve bows that are available in the market, and that they usually vary in length, colors, quality, and prices.

The most basic recurve bow has a riser made from machined aluminum. It may also be constructed from wood ormagnesium alloy. These are highly important to consider because the characteristics of these materials allow the bow togive high performance by maintaining accurate geometry. These risers also usually have pockets for a clicker and 2 pressure button locations. While its limbs are more often made from fiberglass, carbon and wood. These are laminated with syntactic foam core and carbon fiber laminations in order to give strength, as well as lightness, and stability to it, especially with different weather conditions. There are also recurve bows that can be dismantled, so that it’s easier to pack and carry especially in long trips.

Compound Bows.

Compound BowCompound Bows is one type of bow that is very much applicable as a hunting weapon, although many archery addicts also use this one for many other good reasons.

The first compound bow was invented by Holless Wilbur Allen in 1966, while it was first patented on 1969. Years have passed and compound bows had become increasingly renowned not only to US, but to other parts of the world as well.

Unlike with other types of bows, a compound bow's string is attached to its pulley, and in which one or two of these has cables attached to the bow's limbs. Once the bowstring is drawn back, the pulley will turn, resulting to pulling the cables, thus making the top and bottom limbs of the compound bow to bend inward and store energy.

Here is a simple explanation on how science works with the use of compound bows. As the limbs are squeezed inwards, there is a stored energy in the limbs, in the form of potential energy. Upon releasing the string, about 70 to 85 percent of that potential energy is transferred to the arrow, now in the form of kinetic energy. Right after, the limbs go back to its original position, after all the energy has been converted and released, and the same process goes with every attempt of making a target using your bows and arrows.

Speaking of arrows, the arrows used together with compound bows slightly differs compared to other arrows used for a different type of bows. The arrows for compound bows are usually made of carbon or aluminum alloy. Wooden arrows are not advisable since they tend to break easily because there's a lot of force transferred to the arrow upon its release.

In choosing your right compound bows, one factor you have to consider is the efficiency of the bows, in terms of how much energy it can store on its limbs and the amount of energy it can pass to the arrow, as explained a while ago.

Surely, there are a lot of compound arrows available of different styles, sizes, colors, and shapes. All you need to do is to be keen enough and not to be blinded by false advertisements. It's also advisable to ask the experts’ advice, so that when you are going to purchase your item, you know you've got a quality and reliable one.

Archery Bows.

Bow is a weapon used together with the arrows. Bows, and arrows, are traced to be the first weapons of war during the medieval periods. Also, there had been studies that the first existence of bows and arrows are discovered in some parts of Africa, where they use the said weapons for hunting animals in the forest. Historians estimated that bows and arrows were first invented as early as the 50,000 BC.Archery Bows

Nowadays, with the presence of the new technology, and with modern day's weapons such as the gunpowder, pistols, heavy duty firearms, and other related kinds, bows are now more dedicatedly used for sports and hobby.

The person who makes the bow is called the bowyer; while the one who creates the arrows is called the fletcher.

A bow basically consists of a pair of elastic limbs, having a string connecting their two ends. The limbs’ first and foremost characteristic is its amazing elasticity, which is obviously very much significant since the limbs of the bow are repeatedly bended in a deep curve by the archer, or whoever uses it for that matter. However, the string that connects the tips of the limbs should also be strong enough in order to resist the force, as it is frequently stretched, and should also be moisture resistant as well, since moist can weaken its strength. Traces were found that the early strings are made out of animals' intestines, or plant fibers such as linen. Nowadays, strings are usually made out of synthetic polymer, as well as of steel cables.

With the modern technology, bows are still in existence, and in fact, certain innovations are made, which come up to different types, sizes and uses of bows.

The basic kinds of bows are the compound bows, recurve bows, and crossbows.
